What’s Inside?

The Young Adult edition includes all the engaging activities of the standard package, plus additional content exploring art history, complex historical narratives, and mature themes appropriate for older students.

  1. Vikings: Meet the Viking Queen, Aud the Deep Minded. Get to know the real Vikings as you read a story about Thor and Loki, weave cord on a lucet, decorate and use a drinking horn, and play music on Viking-style pan pipes.
  2. Japan: Discover the age of the Samurai! Make your own mini rock garden, learn the art of origami, and enjoy a tasty treat with a traditional flavor.
  3. Mongols: Ride with Genghis Khan, discover traditional Mongol games, enjoy felting wool, and refresh yourself with a traditional Mongolian drink.
  4. Ming Dynasty: Enter the Forbidden City during the Ming Dynasty! Read the real Ballad of Mulan, learn about the societal importance of fans, discover the origins of printing books and then print your own.
  5. Benin: Tour one of the Medieval centers of art and culture in Benin. Find out how snail shells were used as currency and then make your own cowrie shell jewelry. Hear Benin folklore from an Own Voices author, learn to play the kalimba, relax and unwind with some traditional African soap.
  6. Native Alaska: Discover the vibrant and diverse cultures of Alaska. Paint a wooden mask inspired by the art of Native Alaskans. Learn about the different ways Native Alaskans thrived in their environments and try out a pair of snow goggles. Make an Alaskan yo-yo and read a Tlingit story about Raven. This box about the history of Native peoples in Alaska was created in collaboration with Yupik and Tlingit artists and writers.

Each box comes with lesson plans, a reading list, and educator resources to support a rich, cross-curricular learning experience.
