A revolutionary method of printing used in the Ming dynasty movable type. In this method, small blocks with characters were placed inside a frame to form the text.  Then, the sheet was laid on top of the inked blocks and rubbed by hand. Arranging the characters was a time-intensive process, but once the type was set, large numbers of copies could be made very quickly and efficiently.
