Life in the English colonies was hard: building houses, communities, and towns from scratch.  Everything had to be made or imported from England at great cost and with a long wait. Can you imagine making your own clothing, starting with a sheep? Women and girls would have spun wool from their own sheep to be woven into fabric by professional weavers.
